Re: [RC] Great Horsemen - heidiIf any of you want to know about one of the greatest endurance riders ever.... look into the history of General Beale, of whom Beale Air Force Base was named after and was the owner of the Tejon Ranch and the creator of Beale's Road also known as the "Mojave Road" which was the southern route of the pioneers to get to California other than going through the Sierras. To bad they had to deal with the Apaches instead. He also headed up the Camel Experiment for the Army, which is another story.... But the point of this is..... He, personally, before his fame..., rode back AND forth, coast to coast, across the U.S. three times in four years on horseback, carrying messages for the Navy of all things (about the discovery of gold and brought the first samples to show congress). Check it out. You can get info from the Tejon Ranch if not from the web.... Steve Shaw Some of the greatest historical endurance riders and horsemen were the circuit-riding clergymen of yesteryear. One Catholic priest made frequent and regular trips back and forth between Mexico City and the Santa Fe area. Methodist founder John Wesley logged over 300,000 miles horseback during his long preaching career (distances figured by reconstructing his routes based upon his daily journal entries). Could list more if my brain was awake, but have had a long and "enduring" day myself being the designated driver getting an elderly parent to medical services and ushering him through same... (Speaking of rural Idaho--one disadvantage to remote rural living is the 175 mile drive one way over a 7000 foot mountain pass to a major medical center... <sigh>) Heidi =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
