Re: [RC] [Guest] Arab/Appy crosses - Karen Sullivan----- Original Message ----- From: "Vicki Austin" <kingston04281@xxxxxxxxx> You cannot worry about "tumors or melinomas" in horses just because they are grey or appys. I have had several horses that have been appys, and grey / whites are my favorite colors for horses. I had one grey (arab something cross) that had so many melanomas. Vicki, I guess this is exactly WHY someone might want to avoid greys or appies! My daughter's grey Arab mare has already had 3 sarcoids cut off..and they were in places where they HAD to be cut out or they would have interfered with tack.....she is a really nice horse, but there has been quite a bit of expense, not to mention downtime. If someone is going to put a ton of time and $ into a horse, maybe it makes sense to avoid such problems to begin with. There are a lot of nice horses out there.....Keep in mind I love greys and actually went looking for greys for awhile.....but probably would never buy an grey again. Another thing I questions is this fad to breed "chrome", or horses with white socks or stockings. A friend of mine has a lovely bay gelding....has had nothing but problems with the two white ankles getting scratches-she swears her next horse will have 4 black stockings! Why breed for the w hite? I have heard of sarcoids in all colors.....but it certainly is predominant in greys.... and I was just questioning the likelyhood of appys to genetically carry the likelyhood of tumors...now I hear about moonblindness.
