[RC] mile markers on trail - Cindy Collins

"But there were no mile markers on the trail (is this common?)"

Boy, I just can't shut up today. Thank goodness I'm leaving my computer
for the weekend. So, dear Kristen, no, there are no mile markers on 99.9%
of endurance rides. That's why it is important to do lots of training
miles on trails where you know the mileage so YOU can learn to pace your
horse and know what a 7 mph pace feels like and what a 10 mph pace feels
like, etc. You should also know how long it takes you to cover different
types of terrain with your horse...hills, deep sand, rocks, etc. You
should know the approximate mph of your horse's walk, slow trot, medium
trot, fast or extended trot, and slow and fast canter. A GPS is a
dynamite investment that takes the guess work out of this process. When I
started you had to use a watch and have a friend with a motorcycle check
the mileage on your training trails. After a few thousand miles, you do
just get a "feel" for how long it will take you to finish a given ride on
a given horse if all goes well and it doesn't turn off 110 degrees or
snow! Good luck to you. Cindy
