I haven't, but mostly because they almost always come, even when not
asked :). Generally, I have the opposite problem...having to remind
them not to mug me every time I come through the gate (and they hear me
coming long before I ever get there) and keeping them from crowding when
they are following me around.

However, since I was a dog trainer before I was a horse trainer and have
used many a dog training technique on my horses, I am surprised that I
never thought of this....because I think it is a great idea!

And no, I don't see any reason that a horse couldn't learn it as easily
as a dog does. Certainly, I have taught many a horse the "long stay."
And there are lots of cowboy stories of horses that come when whistled
to....didn't Silver...or was it Trigger....or both?
