Re: [RC] teach your horse to come when called - Charles

I had my mare, Finders Keepers trained to come when I whistled Nessun Dorma.
I found it really useful. Someone on the internet has a set of instruction
on how to get your horses to come when you whistle.

I find a lottery method works best. I have a reward ready, and usually just
call to give a treat. Sometimes, I call to have her come in for something
like work, or shoeing, or whatever. They get a treat each time so they are
happy to come, and because I don't just call for work, they figure it's
worth coming cause sometimes you get lucky and get a treat for doing
nothing.

A side benefit is that sometimes I just have to go into the field and they
come to me even if I don't whistle.

Subject: [RC] teach your horse to come when called

Just curious how many have taught your horses to come when called (like a
dog). I go out in to the pasture, and yell for the horses, and they come
running, into the barn, for the snack I have waiting on them. My next
step,
is to start carrying a whistle, and yell for them, but also use the
whistle.
That way, they will start to respond to the whistle, and not just MY
voice.
(I have a special yell, that is very high pitched, and I say "Here
Boys"...my hubby can not duplicate my yell)

Anyway, I have not worked on them coming to me in smaller enclosures, just
when it is treat time. The second reason I was going to start with the
whistle, was because I do carry one on me when I ride, so hopefully if the
horse and I parted ways, I could whistle if they started to take off, and
hopefully they would come back. If we can teach a dog to come when
called..........my Arabians should be a breeze <grin>

Anyone have their horse trained to do so every time you ask???
