Re: [RC] [RC] Rascal, the hackamore and 1st.Trailride - Shelley Kerr
I agree that the horse is being a brat. In fact I have a couple
green ones at home that start throwing tantrums if they want to be
somewhere else (especially if they think the other horses are eating)
instead of having to listen to me. I don't make a big deal out of
it, but I do make them continue doing whatever we were doing until I
want to quit or they start behaving then quitting shortly after is how I
try to resolve their tantrums. They aren't going to get their way,
otherwise I am telling them they can do that any time they don't want to
do something and I'll give in. If my horse is acting up on the trail
because he wants to go home fast, then I turn them around and head the
other direction for awhile, then I'll turn back and as soon as they start
acting up, I head back down the trail again, even further this time.
Usually by the third or 4th time they are starting to figure it out and
will start to behave. Some may take longer, depending how long they
have gotten away with the misbehavior in the first place. If you
know your horse is going to act up, then it's best to make sure you'll
have the time if you need it do correct the behavior.

Rascal, the hackamore and 1st.Trailride
Hi Laurie,
This sounds a lot more like a horse
being a brat than a reaction to the hackamore. I'd say this was
a training issue, not a bit issue.
Good
luck!
