[RC] Fever Rings - Wendy Mancini

Jim Holland wrote:
Sunny got a big time ring from the fall in a bog at Pirate Run last
spring.  Pulled something high up in the hip...out the rest of the
spring.  Not just a ring, but a gap in the hoof wall, increasing in size
as it grew out.

Had this happen to one of our horses and it was absolutely related to concussion trauma.  Once the gap had grown down about half way we became concerned about thrush in the gap and also instability of the hoof wall.   Our farrier dremmeled the crack just enough to clean out any sand, debris & to disinfect the area.  Then he filled it with hoof acrylic.  The acrylic stayed in place until it was completely grown out.  After that we switched from metal shoes to Ground Control Horseshoes (Plastic horseshoes) and have had great success  & no more rings.
