Re: [RC] 'fever rings' in hooves - Jackie WinklemanI was talking about the appearance of lameness when I refered to the "tolerent of pain." One of my horses does not appear to be lame when she abcesses and another lays down and acts like she is dying. That IS a difference in tolerance of pain. --- Heidi Smith <heidi@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: I was told by both the farrier and vets that some horses are more tolerant to painanddon't appear to be lame. Mostly she just gets the rings around her hooves. They both said that the rings are just stress. Can be just from the ride, change of feed, etc.It isn't really a matter of being "tolerant to pain"--it is actually a matter of some horses simply having tougher tissues there that don't become inflamed from the stress and concussion, and some not being that way. You can improve the situation with work, but some horses are just naturally more resilient than others. The majority of horses do not get these rings from rides--but I've seen enough horses such as you describe to agree with your vet and farrier that they come from the rides.
