[RC] re: do you ride in this weather? - A. PerezNow? Now way, but as a horse-crazed kid growing up in Maine, I did. I remember going out in -10 degrees. After a couple of hours on the trail my feet would get so numb that I'd go straight to my knees when dismounting, it hurt so badly when my feet hit the ground! I also remember how slippery a nylon snowmobile suit is on a saddle! REALLY cold weather (teens and lower) was actually less bothersome then warmer weather: when it got up in the 30s, the snow balls up in the horses feet terribly, you have to dismount and pick hooves every half hour or so, even if we'd packed them with petroleum jelly. We only rode on weekends, since there was too little daylight after school. Now I am an adult and my cold tolerance is way down, and my horse sweats so much that cooling him out is not worth the bother. But is you can handle to cold, it won't be a problem for your horse. The month's "The Horse" has an article on the metabolism of the horse and how they keep warm. It says horses handle the cold way better then the heat. ________________________________________________ Get your own "800" number Voicemail, fax, email, and a lot more http://www.ureach.com/reg/tag =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
