[RC] too old/too green, ring work vs trai work for youngsters - A. PerezI'll second the 'oh to be 23 again' - or, to be more precise, oh to have the body of a 23 year old again. I'll second the advise on lessons, but will add this suggestion: if at all possible find a stable that will get you out ont he trail in addition to ring-work. There are skills learned ont he trail that you simply cannot get in a ring, such as knowing how horses move in different terrains and react to new things. As for ring work vs trail work for youngsters, I think it is good for them to have both. I bought my walker gelding from the woman who trained him. I don't know for sure, but my guess is she did minimal ring work before getting him out on the trail. He is fabulous on the trail bet gets very impatient with ring work and starts acting up and testing me after a few times around the ring. There are times when ring riding is the best (and sometimes only) option, so having to deal with his 'ring attitude' can be annoying. More time in the ring as a youngster may have helped. And conversely I have known horses who spent so much time in the ring they were basket cases on the trail... so both, I feel, is needed. ________________________________________________ Get your own "800" number Voicemail, fax, email, and a lot more http://www.ureach.com/reg/tag =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
