[RC] Trucks - rides2far

From my perspective the F150 is barely adequate. tom sites

I hauled for years and years with a 1979 1/2 ton Chevy Silverado. It had a 350
engine, V8 automatic. I loved it. I pulled 2 1100 lb. Appaloosas all around the
Appalachian Mtns in a standard 2 horse trailer. Had no problems with the "big
climb" up at Tellico. Joe Frankum used to say you didn't just have to have a
horse that could do the trail...you had to have a rig that could climb that
mtn. To tell the truth...I also had no brakes hooked up and the hitch was a
ball screwed onto a step bumper. Ah, those were the days. >g< No problems
pulling up Monteagle which was the big test in these parts.

Later pulled with a 92 Chevy Silverado, again 1/2 ton V8 automatic. No heavy
duty package of any kind that I know of. Could haul 2 horses in a 2 horse steel
trailer very comfortably at 65 mph with no straining on the hills. Hot summers
here, no over heating. Only problem I ever had was trying a V-6 305 Chevy.
Really felt the difference in power. *That* was barely adequate. Had a friend
who used to pull with a Ford Ranger. *that* was barely adequate.

If I wasn't pulling a gooseneck sometimes now I'd still use a 1/2 ton. It
seemed geared better to cover ground on the long hauls than my 3/4 ton does. I
guess I could qualify for a loan to get a super-truck...but then I'd have to
work all the time to pay for it and my horse would be out of shape. Better to
show up with a truck that's just adequate and a horse that's more than. :-))
