Re: [RC] Scales - Lucie Hancock

In the SE we have benefited from having the SERA scales at many of the rides. It is my understanding the data collected may prove beneficial in helping us better understand how to care for our horses during a ride. Personally, I like knowing how much my horse(s) lose during each loop. My biggest problem is that sometimes I lose focus and forget to weigh my horse. Each of the horses I have weighed have learned easily enough to get up on the scale and stand still. It takes repeated practice, but they learn to do ot, and remain calm. The "first time" horsess need patient handling and repetition, but I think the information we gain can be really helpful. I know that I have adjusted what I feed my horses at the vet checks, adding more wet beetpulp, carrots and apples, and I am careful to electrolyte them, especially in warm weather. I am also more careful with my conditioning at home. It has made us better. They have gained weight, and do not lose as much during the ride as they used to. My theory is that the more we know the better off we all are.
