I for one prefer getting a horse out on the trail as soon as possible. For the most part, if something goes west on the trail my reasoning is that I'll get brushed off before it picks up too much speed and when I land I'll hopefully land on a few decades worth of humus.

I would grant that not everyone has the luxury of wooded
brushy trails but when you do, it's golden.
