Re: [RC] re: [RC] impatient horse trailering troubles - Karen SullivanAll the ones I have bought that had limited trailering experience; I fed in the trailer for several weeks. Left whole rig in my arena turn around area.... tied back gate open (had huge stock/slant step up that they could walk in, eat, and turn around....helped trememdously as once horse learned they could get themselves in and out, the trailer ceased to become a big deal. Then, since they are not panicked about the whole trailer deal, you can teach them manners about getting in and out. Then, always hauled with hay bag with really good hay, etc. As far as hauling a youngster.....I had bought a weanling, and was going to pick her up on way back from endurance ride. My friend and I both had slant/stock trailers (just very convenient and nothing inside to get hung up on). What we did, since I had the larger trailer, was I hauled her horses home with mine, and we put the filly loose in her trailer. This baby was "sort of"halter broke", not taught to tie yet. We were all shocked when she hopped right in the back of the trailerr, and we left her loose. I followed behind her all the way home (3 hours). At first she was moving back and forth (facing backward by the back gate), but finally settled down and just stood there. He just wants outta there. I tried a cloth feed manger full of hay, he tore it down. Now I either hang a bucket fiarly high with some soaked Equine Sr. to keep him busy, or put some of it in one of those hanging feeder bags also hung up high. Since he gets only hay at home, a little snack keeps him totally distracted. I also leave him in the trailer for a while after we get home, so he doesn't equate me stopping with him getting right out. It has helped some, he is being much quieter now. Only time will tell if his quiet behavior becomes a habit. :-) Happy Trails, Michelle (Marvel, CO) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
