Re: [RC] [Guest] Good Hay! - DESERTRYDR1I would feed about 3/4 forage mix and 1/4 alfalfa if I had a choice in the matter. I would feed the forage mix separately from the alfalfa, so that I could add more alfalfa during cold spells, and cut back a bit when the horses weren't working. A couple years ago a big hay producer had a blowout in one of his fields. He threw some forage mix (oat, beardless barley and a tiny bit of pea) into a field that had timothy and alfalfa in it, but not thick enough to get a crop off of. I bought that hay, the horses LOVED it. They stayed real sleek and happy on it. All of the other horses at the boarding facility would get into my hay every time they got an opportunity (gates left open, etc.) I would buy more if I could get it, it was one of those freak things that probably won't happen again. My hay supplier bales everything in three string bales, but most of the horse people I know, including me, prefer two-string bales. Easier handling for those of us without mechanical aids. About 23 bales to the ton seems to produce a bale that is not outrageously hard for a single person in good condition to wrestle with. Too bad you are so far away, I would be interested in your forage mix, but can't afford to pay transportation costs. jeri =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
