Re: [RC] BLM adoptions at rides. - Heidi SmithWell everyone is entitled to their own opinion and so I am going to voice mine. I wholeheartedly disagree with most of this post. I am president of an organization here in the intermountain region (Intermountain Wild Horse & Burro Advisors, Inc.) we mentor people in the area that adopt wild horses. The techniques we use can be used by even the newest horse owner that is interested in learning. We also gentle several horses for each adoption in the state of Utah. These horses are all gentled by volunteers, many who do not own horses (some who never have) that want to learn. And we are getting great results. Janet, your post dealt mostly with gentling the mustangs--a topic on which I did not even touch in my post. So I don't know how you can say you disagree with "most of my post" by simply addressing issues of gentling. I've seen several who "gentled" just fine. My issues have to do with the qualities of the horses themselves and the farcical romantic notions, the ineptness of the entire government management of the feral horses, etc. I also feel that having AERC get into the "business" of aiding in the adoption program flies in the face of the many AERC members who work their fingers to the bone to breed quality endurance horses.
