Any hard core endurance riders out
there??
Had opening
hunt Saturday. It was VERY warm out--at least 80 degrees. A friend came
in on a horse and was hosing him down, all the sudden the horse starts blowing,
half rearing and stumbling. I didnt see this at first, but saw him leading the
horse around. The horse looked terrified and was 'spooking' almost. This
progressed into violent shaking/convulsions and profuse sweating. Some folks
thought he was tieing up, but he was walking--I told them to stand still if the
horse was tieing up--walking was the worst thing to do. They Gave the horse some
ace and made him stand still. I suggested they hose him down as he was
burning up. I thought the horse was going to die right in front of me. His
eyes were rolling in the back of his head, and he was just about falling down.
He was having a hard time standing, and i was certain he was going down. He got
better when I held his head and stroked his ears, and eventually the ace kicked
in and he settled down. We continued to hose him down on his legs and major
veins. When I left he was standing quietly, but was unable to move very well,
and very weak/stumbling. His body temperature was VERY VERY hot. Will find
out what happened I hope, but I wanted to know if anybody ever had this
happen? It was almost like the horse had West Nile or something. The vet was
called, who stated "muscle spasms" Muscle spasms my ass! So, did he tie up
terribly? Heat stroke? Anybody??
Subsequent info, in response to my
questions.
Thanks for the response--I didnt see
the horse at first, but the owner was leading it around and it was flipping its
head and almost "spooking".
The wierd thing is that the horse
had been cooled out and walked all the way back in, and only started sweating
about 15 minutes into this behavior, which is why I thought "tie up" and not
heat stroke--the walking was making him much worse In my opinion.
Feel free to forward, i'm really
curious what this could have been.
