[RC] [Guest] heaters for water - Ridecamp Moderator"Andrea Day" <fetlocks@xxxxxxxxxxx> Tracy: Tough to keep your water warm without electricity. I've seen three ways to warm/thaw water in winter. My brother-in-law up in Council, Idaho had a heavy metal waterproof stove with lava rock in the bottom that he kept in a large round trough. In the morning, he'd build a fire in it and bank it good. It would keep the trough almost bathtub warm all day, and keep it thawed most of the night. A neighboring rancher had a large oval trough stuck partway through the fence with a little round trough in the end of it where the horses couldn't get at it. He'd light a kerosene heater and put it in the little trough, then cover the top most of the way with a heavy piece of metal and let it burn a couple hours. That would be enough to take the chill off/keep it from freezing at night, and since his trough was painted black, it pretty well stayed thawed during the day. The other deal I didn' actually see, but read about a couple years ago in Western Horseman. A fella dug a large pit under his big round trough and lined it with rock. Said the column of warm air from underground kept the trough from freezing. Sounds bizarre, but he swore it worked. It wouldn't take the chill off, but at least it didn't freeze. Before I had trough heaters, I used to run the hottest water I could into a couple five gallon buckets and dump them into the trough to thaw it. Had a stallion that would drink this hot hot water right from the bucket. Got so he'd nicker for his 'tea' in the morning. Sure glad I don't have to do that anymore!!
