The horrifying thing is that such breedings are not alawys
accidental.  Go to dreamhorse.com and search for mares-in-foal'
between the ages of 1 and 3: you will get over a hundred hits. 
Read a some of these ads and you'll see deliberate breedings.  

Any vets out there care to comment on this praxctice?  It seems
breeding before the age of 3 or 4 is pushing it.
