Re: [RC] Let em' race! - Sisu West Ranch"Riders MUST demonstate they have the abiliy to evaluate unsafe situations " I would hold that the ride manager has a very strong duty to set up for a safe finish line. The ride manager also has a strong duty to cover the finish line racing rules both in writing and orally at the ride meeting. If the ride manager thinks carefully, there is usually a safe place to put the finish line. Examples: 1. At one MN ride (the site is no longer used) the ride manager set up the finish on a public gravel road. The reason was that racing down the usual trail to the camp would endanger trail riders from another horse camp. Watchers on the road, flagged down cars etc. so there would not be car horse interactions. (please don't flame that racing on public road etc. can never be safe. This is an example of how a particular ride avoided a particular perceived problem. Other better solutions may or may not have existed) 2. At my ride I had the finish line, complete with sec'y timer 2 miles from the camp. The reason was that after that point you went through a river, a rocky pasture, and down a paved road to camp. The rules stated that anyone above a trot on the paved road at any time would be disqualified. That worked well.
