Re: [RC] automatic sanctions - Barbara McCraryI can't believe this is happening. I just think about Julie, a dear friend, one of the most caring people I have ever met in my life, being sanctioned for having her horse die of some metabolic failure. If I were in her place, I think I wouldn't even WANT to stay in the sport because of being so cruelly judged and punished. There ARE riders whose horses have died, during and after a ride, that were NOT riding too close to the edge or anything of the sort. Some horses just have a metabolic weakness or quirk that will kill them, during a ride, after a ride, or just standing in a paddock. We simply cannot punish a rider for a dead horse, because we cannot judge who is riding beyond the edge and who is ill-fated enough to have a horse that has a metabolic flaw. I think we need to drop this idea of sanctioning riders whose horses died and get on with riding. If we are all so scared of having a horse die in competition, then maybe we should fold up endurance riding and take up knitting. I wouldn't want to lose a horse, either, but as sure as we keep horses and ride them, somewhere, somehow, there will be a horse die, now and then. We ARE learning more and more about horse metabolism, more than we would have learned had endurance riding not been started. We all have pets that die, too, but the reason we are all so worried is that we RIDE horses and somehow we assume that a horse dies because it is OUR fault. Maybe it is, and maybe it isn't. I don't know what else to say, but I surely am opposed to punishing a rider because his/her horse died as a result of being on an endurance ride. We'll have to think up another solution. Not so here, just emphasizing, as I would in conversation) ----- Original Message ----- From: <rides2far@xxxxxxxx> To: <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, October 24, 2003 6:59 PM Subject: Re: [RC] automatic sanctions So: if a horse dies at the ride for metabolic reasons, orat aclinic after referral from a ride--automatic 1 year suspension.I just don't care for it. I think about the horses that fell down the bluff at Tevis. I think of Julie Suhr losing a horse she paced carefully. I think of Teddy Bear rupturing a weak aorta or whatever it was. If something like that happened to a fine endurance rider I would think it would be important for them to get back out there as soon as possible or we might lose them.
