Running Bear Farms used to carry interesting bumper stickers. I don't
know if they still do. But one said, "If To Finish Is To Win, Then Why
Do We Have First Place?"
It gets right down to the fact that the AERC motto is "To Finish Is To
Win," but different people are in the sport for different reasons and
have different goals. For some it is to finish at local rides. For some
it's miles. For some it's yes - to win. They are all goals that fit
within sport - none any more noble than the other.
The great thing about this sport is it can be many things to many
different people.
In my personal opinion to come away from a ride with a healthy, happy
horse that's ready to go back down the trail is to win.

Do I dare to question why the
emphasis on competition...i.e. points, awards, placements, miles,
etc. isn't mentioned as one of the culprits here? I thought "to finish
is to win" was the creed...... but the more rides I went to, the more I
heard about first place, time, top ten, etc. and the less I heard about
"to finish is to win"
