[RC] [Guest] LD's vs 50's - Ridecamp Moderator

Gaby gviglas@xxxxxxxxxxx
Hi, i usually opt not to post on ridecamp and just be a silent reader, however, in this case i just cannot help it. Admittedly i am one of 'those people' who started doing 50's and never looked back, with the ultimate goal of completely 100's when my horse is ready (he is only 6 and we still have a couple more years to go in the leg areas). We started very slow 50's in early 2002 and we have done a couple of faster 50's this year mixed with slow one's. Not to mention i picked the 'faster' races VERY carefully keeping in mind the terrain and conditions my horse seems to perform best under. Anyway to cut a long story short, we got pulled sevral months later doing slow 50's for a couple of very different reasons. Time to go back to the drawing board...I also went on vacation for a month in summer...this left my horse idle for at least a month...when i came back we started training again, starting slow, and moving faster...at this point i believe i had solutions for the problems we had encountered. So, now what? in light of the fact that he had been pulled from 2 races consecutively we both 'needed' a finish for morale and there is no way to test this if i don't race him...He felt more than ready at home for a 50. But did i want to risk putting him through pain if my 'solutions' were not right? NO...so we did a 25 for morale, and yes we went fast, we started up front and stayed there...and yes my solutions worked he is back where he needs to be...My point is; people do certain distances for various reasons...as it turned out my horse WAS ready for a 50 again...do i regret doing a 25...NO...and do i regret showing for BC, NO...there have been several LD's who have bumped up to 50's and i don't believe we treat them with a bad attitude, whether they go on to knock the socks of our horses or not, so why the amniosity?...Most of us are out there for one reason, FUN.
