Re: [RC] [Guest] distance between checks - Barbara McCraryThis post reminds me of a story written awhile back about one rider's experience on the 2003 Swanton Pacific 100. She had said that the first vet check was at 35 miles. This was incorrect and I should have corrected it then, but just let it slip. There was a no-hold vet check at 15 miles. The horses were examined thoroughly at the point but were not required to stay. The next vet check was at 36 miles and was a 1 hour hold. All of the vet checks were roughly no more than 15 miles apart. In light of the recent discussions about frequency of vet checks, if someone read that SP's first vet check was at 35 miles they might be horrified, so I thought clarification was in order. As a RIDER I can and DO give my horses breaks often on longer loops. I have felt the difference in training, learned from this, and I slow down and/or change my riding plan for longer looped rides. As a rider I prefer shorter loops. I'm allowed to have a preference. However, as a RIDE MANAGER, you have to assume not all riders are going to care for their horses in the same manner. So as a ride manager I do everything in my power to help them out. Thus more loops, longer holds, and water.
