Re: [RC] what's the point... - sharp pennyI've been to a lot of trail rides, benefit for this and that. And I've never seen one out of 7 horses lined up at IV's even before the ride was finished. I have at in endurance rides. This need not scare us, it Ahhhh, I have but, there were no vets there to intervene and help horses by putting them on IV's...I have seen fat out of shape horses overridden, colicky horses, horses tieing up, horses ridden with ugly open sores and alot of uncaring/ignorant? *horse people* that thought it more important to drink beer and socialize after tha ride than properly tend to their horses. Don't kid yourself it happens in other venues besides endurance. It dosn't make it right and I think *we* are going about it the right way by looking for trends and gathering data..but this needs to be a long term, several years, project before anyone starts talking about changing things at rides, new rules and regulations. It may be that we pick a few rides in every region to try out some of the longer holds, fewer loops and other easily do-able subjects that have been bouncing around this list. Then we can scrutinize these rides over time vs rides that don't have these changes and crunch the appropriate numbers to compare and contrast. Also maybe someone can make up log books to give to people who want to be the *guniea pigs* that will attend many rides both the old way and new change rides next year. This would give us more detailed information of the changed rides vs the standard rides from a rider/horse perspective. It would also be great if these vol. log book people could have their horse weighed and blood drawn at the rides to give some physical measurable data over a year. I know I for one would be more than happy to be a *test tube* rider and would gladly pay extra to help cover the expense of all it would entail to empliment it. To me it would be worth an extra $20 or so/ride just for my own personal knowledge and to help the number crunchers get a better fix on things like length of loops, hold times, CRI and so forth. This way we are not increasing everyones entry fees. Regards, Penny should energize toward working toward doing all we can to help the horses better participate in the sport by trying to mitigate these stress factors.
