[RC] getting for 50's - June Scheunemann & Mike BernsdorfWasn't sure how to title this response anyhow......here in the midwest alot of folk start their horses doing competitve riding. Some start off doing SLOW 25 LD's.....we find that comp teaches the horse patience and you don't have that racey start of an endurance ride. Now, some don't like all the stuff of grading the horse on scratches (I think alot refer to this part of competitve riding as the "games"), wind puffs, etc...Just from our own experience when we started a horse that was off the track (thought he would be ready for the 50's...physically he was but, mentally...no way)we started him on 50's after this learning experience we said no way would we start right out with 50's on a horse no matter how old. I think if all can do a slower pace of 25 comp or LD and as the year progresses ride 25's back to back (here in the midwest we have LD on both Sat and Sun) It really provides a good solid base for moving up to 50's. I really like to have 1000 miles of comp on my horses before I move them up to 50's. Speed is easy to teach a horse ....but, taking care of oneself on the trail comes with time and patience for both horse and rider.
