Re: [RC] Size of horse at AERC nat'l champ - Lucy Trumbull

Keep in mind that both Tezeros Gold and Kooter are partbreds. And other
than size, they both still fit the balanced conformational model pretty
well. One is more apt to find larger horses that are still balanced in
breeds other than the Arabian, and hence also in partbreds...

Having had the pleasure of tending to Kooter during a
hold at Tevis one year, I can attest to the above.
Looking at him from a distance, you don't realise
just how *big* he is until you get up close - he's
like a scaled-up model of a "normal" <chuckle> sized
horse.

One thing that struck me about Mommesin and Monsieur
Joseph was that they both had lil' feet. After becoming
paranoid about the "endurance horses must have big feet"
concept, I'm always on the lookout for "normal" ;-)
sized feet (esp. after sadly watching my farrier put yet
another set of 0s on my pones... He tells me you have to
*buy* the horse that way, they don't grow into the bigger
shoes.)

Of the horses that finished in the top 10 the 100, three
horses that stood out as being "large" were Jazon Wonders'
Gandhi, Dave Cootware's Talasmans Cruzer (sp?)(who I believe
they mentioned is 16 hh... Dave is about 4' tall <g>), and
of course the mustang Robin Hood, ridden by Vicki Giles. I
hasten to add that anything over 15 hh looks large to me,
especially at 1 am.
