Re: [RC] Most Coveted Award - oddfarm----- Original Message ----- From: "k s swigart" <katswig@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: "Truman Prevatt" <tprevatt@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> And since this accomplishment (before it was an award) was first achieved by Joe Long with Kahill when he was riding in the SE and before he retired, it obviously isn't out of reach for somebody not on the west coast. Well, it depends on where you are in the SE. Here in central Florida it could be mighty difficult. We are talking 10, 100 mile riders per year, right? Right now there are only 8, one day 100's and 1, two day 100. Six of them are in Florida and 3 of those are about 2 weeks apart, one right after the other. The four out of Florida are 12-15 hours or more driving time. So even if there was one more in the summer, which would be pretty brutal, that is an awful lot of driving and riding long distances close together for one year on one horse. And before you all go off on, "That's what endurance is all about," remember that those are the first things we look at when horses don't do well and /or have to be treated on a ride. Long distance traveling and not enough water consumption. Doing rides to close together. And here in miserable, humid, hot, sticky, 99% of the time central Florida, doing just a 20+ training ride can wipe out your horse for a few days as well as the rider. We still have 90 degree weather with high himidity in our fall season. It could be something to aspire to, but would it be worth it? Would you still have a sound horse at the end? Would your husband and children recognize you when you "popped in" to do laundry and check ride camp? How much do you love your trailer that you will be living in most of the time? Seriously, it would be a great goal to shoot for, if you lived somewhere else besides Florida, or if you didn't have to work, raise kids and take care of a farm. How DID you do that, Joe??
