Re: [RC] Degenerative Hock - DESERTRYDR1My mare has a hock that has some arthritis in the lower joints, which are the ones that can fuse without hurting movement. She was diagnosed two and a half years ago by X-ray. The vet told me to keep riding her as she tolerated it (light to medium riding unless she was lame) giving bute afterwards if she needed it. This year I have noticed that hock seems somewhat swollen/bigger than the other one. I mentioned it to the vet last week, and he didn't seem concerned. She is not lame on it, but doesn't much like going down hills, which I think is because of the strain it puts on the hock. My vet told me that by NOT giving the joint supplements and by riding her, the joint would fuse faster. I still do give her MSM and sometimes Corta-Flx powder, as she has other issues on occasion. But the year after she was diagnosed, she did 4 LD's and the next year (last year) she did 2 LD's and 2 50's. This year she had a torn suspensory. And when I started riding her after that healed, she sprained her ankle. This mare has, on average, two or three moderate Boo-Boo's a year. She is my accident prone darling. She is smooth, fun to ride, and a real personality, but if there's a way to get hurt she will find it. jeri =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
