Re: [RC] Advice for a 3 yo - DESERTRYDR1

At age 3, I wouldn't worry as much about taking the wrong lead under saddle,
it's hard work for a baby to balance both itself and the rider. As long as it
can pick up the correct lead when free lunged, it will probably do okay with
additional training and conditioning. I worked with a 6 year old mare that
couldn't ever pick up the left lead, being free-lunged, on a lunge line or
under
saddle. Nobody ever asked her to, so she almost always cantered on the right
lead. She could canter a fairly tight circle to the left on the right lead.
Retraining took about 1 1/2 or 2 months, but in the end she could do flying
lead changes on command.

Most horses don't have perfectly matched feet. As long as there are no
lameness issues, and you understand that farrier work will need to be done on a
very regular schedule, I wouldn't worry to much about a little clubbiness in
one
foot. It's another of those things that requires regular maintenance and
vigilance on the owner's part. jeri
