Re: [RC] [RC] Natural balance shoes and St. Croix eventer shoes - beth glover - Lori Bertolucci
Maggie, thanks, I will try to always take a cold drink for her with me and
make sure I do something special or add extra to my payment. Maybe even on those
cold winter days...yes, we sometimes do have those here in Bakersfield...have
something nice and hot for her to drink. And I can't ever see Mary on a diet,
she burns off more calories then she could ever consume.

Ah, but those Christmas gifts are nice,
too....don't think we don't appreciate those even when tips are absent.
But even that occasional $5 or $10 (once a really, really rich gal tipped us
$50....must have been the husband/wife comedy routine!) will buy lunch or a
treat OR have some iced tea or hot cocoa...those are good tips, too.
Better find out if the farrier is on a diet though before bringing bread and
cookies. :)

Wow Maggie, I never thought about tippng my farrier. She is absolutely
wonderful, and I buy her gifts at Christmas, but tipping...never even
crossed my mind. Now I will do so, as I never want her to quit me! If I can
tip my hairdresser, then I can surely tip her and she works by far
harder!

Don't forget that a farrier has to add
on his cost for shipping and a profit. He puts out money to keep
shoes in stock and since it is his/her living, of course, he would like to
make a profit. AND if a farrier is also applying the NB PRINCIPLES
to the NB shoes and measuring for Duckett's Dot, and setting the shoe
back, etc. then there is more time involved than fitting your run of the
mill keg shoe. We don't use NB shoes (too slippery and dangerous in
our opinion) but when Nelson squares the toe and is otherwise trying
to correct a problem, it SHOULD cost more (though that is an argument I
never win). And aluminum IS more expensive. What you
should be asking yourself is if the guy did a good job, are you happy, is
your horse happy, is he moving better, does he treat the horse right and
what will you do if he hears you begrudge him $20? Personally, those
kinds of clients get dropped like a hot potato from our client list.
Next time think about adding a tip and telling him that you appreciate his
time and effort. Otherwise, if you really don't, then find someone
you DO.
