Re: [RC] ideas - LSimoni197Susan,The simplest way to take a test would be to touch a strip of sensitive paper to the gum of the horse at the same time as checking the color and refill. As you suggested, paper can be developed to react very rapidly to many things in the urine. So, are there some substances, which could be tested for, which develop, or intensify in the saliva in a horse who is dehydrated? OK, if not the saliva, what about in the sweat? OK, later in the ride, many horses come in dry, but there is sweat under the saddle. Maybe something like moisture in the breath? That might be different at different temps. Not as good, but perhaps in the lower intestine, a swab could check for moisture, or what is in that moisture at that minute? Probably none of this information exists at this moment, but if it could be developed, these would be simple, cheap tests which could be done by the Vet. Sec. at a ride. Lynge
