Re: [RC] [RC] hundred milers & fear of the dark - Maureen A. FagerHey Pat, Riding in the dark was an issue for me at my first 100, here are some stratagies that helped me: Ride at night in training rides if possible. (You probally do this anyway.) Training rides aren't the same as late night in a ride, but they help. Figure out a lighting system that works for you: glow bars, flashlights, strobe lights, flood light (just kidding) - if you carry a flashlight, pack a couple of extra batteries. If possible, pick a ride with lots of starters-I picked the VC100-started 60+ last year. I didn't have a riding buddy, but I know the "ususal suspects" who are tail enders, where I was expecting to finish and buddied up with them. I was not the only one who did this. Finding a riding buddy or a group is a big help. Take advantage of oppurtinites that may arise: at one of the outer "rest stops" one of the folk I was riding with picked up a junior whose sponsor had dropped out. Instant riding buddy. The best thing I did for myself was I rode the last loop of this ride a few weeks before the ride. This made a huge difference to me at the ride and was a tremendous help. I'm afraid of the dark also but don't let that fear stop you! Best, Maureen Reno, NV _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus
