Re: [RC] [RC] 100 milers(job survey, etc.) - Nancy MittsPenny,At the beginning I just don't even think about the day's distance, I just ride. Later on, I mostly think vet check to vet check. On looped rides it is very important to pay very close attention to trails that will be repeated after dark. Look for potential problem areas you want to try to get through by a certain time, and distinct landmarks. At Christmas in Kansas this year my mare reverted to her mental childhood at the start of the ride, and we just weren't in sync at all. I got way, way behind everyone else, and was going to be in the dark on a section of trail management didn't think we'd be on in the dark. I was able to pinpoint exactly how far I'd get by dark & some volunteers went out and marked a couple critical spots. I was also able to tell them, once I get to X it will be fine from there. Of course, you can't ALWAYS count on getting that royal treatment. I would have found my way through anyway, it just would have taken longer. There are usually a lot of people willing to help 100's who don't have crews, just ask. Especially if they remember they can go to bed earlier if you finish earlier, ha ha!
