Re: [RC] Hacamore riders, halters? - David & Maggie

. Charlie doesn't have a halter; I use a horse collar on him.

        I've never seen/used a horse collar----what are the
advantages/disadvantages??

We have collars on all of ours, all of the time. They are handy for catching
horses in the field, or when they get loose and you have to drag them home.
Handy for changing bridle for halter and vice-versa.

Ours are just two dog collars with plastic hardware snapped together. Strong
enough to remind the horse that they are confined, but weak enough to break
if they catch it on a fencepost. Also, I try to keep dog tags with contact
info on the collars. And just for kicks, one year they all had rabies tags.
I suppose it would be a good place to put a bell for deer season, too.

Only disadvantage is that sometimes they'll rub a little behind the ears.
And Lucky is good at losing them.
