Re: [RC] [RC] 100 Milers - Michelle Fink"NATRC started out in the early days with ONLY Open rides (fast 30 - 35 miles in a day). Then it added Novice (slower & fewer miles) for beginners and 4 year old horses. Then it dumbed down again to offer another class (Competitive Pleasure) for those who didn't want to ride Open but were too advanced for Novice. Why, we ask, don't people move up to the original intent of the organization... Open rides???" At least in my NATRC region, most of the CP riders have the talent and the horse to compete in Open, but physically their bodies cannot take that much trotting so they ride in CP (several ride gaited horses because posting is not an option). They get to compete, enjoy their well-conditioned horse, ride a tough trail, and have a great day. NATRC gets to keep some experienced and excellent competitors/mentors in the sport by offering CP. Insulting them by calling the class they ride in "dumbed down" is not fair at all.
