Re: [RC] RC wish I had said that! - Bonnie DavisOK Guys, I got an idea. Now remember, I'm NOT an endurance rider so before you all start beating me over the head -- remember that. This is just a suggestion but who knows, it might open up a whole new 'endurance section'. Have endurance rides in 25, 50 and 100 miles -- but the horse and rider are a team. No pit crews. That's what I said, NO pit crews. (OK, everyone can get up off the floor now and stop laughing and start beating me up.....) When I say no pit crews -- I mean the horse and rider are a team and as a team the rider is the ONLY person allowed to touch or care for the horse. Once the rider and horse pass the first vet inspection and are 'officially' entered -- no one else can touch the horse but the rider! The rider has to feed, water, clean, groom, saddle the horse and then feed, water, clean, cloth and dress one's self. When the ride begins, the rider and horse take off -- and at the first vet stop, the rider has to present the horse and care for the horse. No one else touches the horse anywhere and if they do -- the team is disqualified. If the rider can't take care of the horse or self, then they are disqualified even if the horse can go on. Again, no pit crews to cool horse or help rider. The only time a pit crew is allowed to step in and help is when the vet says so in order to take care of the horse. Or the rider drops out because one feels they just can't take another step or lift another bucket full of water for the horse to drink from or get the horse cooled down or get one's self back on the horse or open a can of soda pop. Or the rider just keels over in a heap and after two kicks from a doctor, is disqualified for failure to respond. Then the pit crew can help the rider up. It's all team work -- one horse, one rider -- without a pit crew over a course of 25, 50, 100 milers. Now, everyone can charge and beat me up....... Bob, I guess it's all in the perception. Too bad more people don't see it as an invitation to take up the challenge. 100 milers are becoming an endangered species, outside of special events. We do not need that in the least.
