RE: [RC] [RC] New to sport too - Diane - Rae Callaway-----Original Message----- We lived in WI with our horses for 30 years. We never blanketed our pastured horses even at -30 F. Under pasture conditions blanketing of healthy horses is not required. They do need to be able to get shelter from the wind etc. And a roof during freezine rain is very nice also. Statements like this have absolutely no bearing on horses that live down south. Winter down here is a completely different animal. It doesn't get cold and stay cold. Most winters, we get a maximum of 2 weeks of really cold weather (near freezing - going below is rare) and those two weeks are not consecutive. We're talking 2 - 3 days at a time, then back up to the 50's or 60's. This is part of the reason that a lot of horses down here don't grow wooly winter coats. They would smother on the warm days! I have left for work many a morning with frost on the grass and come home wishing I had shorts on.
