[RC] [Guest] hyponatremia - Ridecamp Moderator

patty peck patty@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Just had an indepth discussion about this subject with my Nephrologist friend who races endurance bike events. He just came back from France after spending 4 days and 3 nights on a bike. It is extreme cases that are far and few inbetween where "water toxicity" or hyponatremia is lethal (it can be). He himself has been racing bikes for more than ten years and this was the first time he ever supplemented with extra sodium tablets on the final day only, he normally chugs water and drinks gator-ade. It is his feeling that a hyponatremic state associated with endurance exercise starts way before the race starts, the individual is probably low in electrolytes and fluids to begin with, drinks straight water and never does catch up with the sodium. The body "hangs on to the water", because it started out dehydrated and an inbalance gets worse as more water is taken in.

In view of this I would think that everyone should let their horses drink as much water as they want, make sure they get their elytes, and start out with a well hydrated horse to begin with......Patty
