Re: [RC] Pan Am Environment issues - oddfarm

This was very well written and very informative. I have never, ever heard of
a horse being tubed for fluids, nor would I ever have thought a horse would
drink too much water. Dr. Hennemen, you are so right when you talk about the
chain of events, and not one single action that lead up to such misfortunes
and how we should be observant of all that we see.

I really appreciate the use of the word team. I know the majority of riders
believe only they are responsible for their horses, and I agree. But the
rider can't know it all. If I have doubts, (intuition) I turn to my crew as
well as the vet. I don't believe I have ever made a decision about whether
to go on or to pull (not that there has been that many times) without
consulting my crew, husband and trainer Wendy. And if in doubt, I'm getting
out. I don't want to have to whudda, cudda, shudda either. I don't have
enough experience to know what other riders know. Therefore, I can't
possibly rely on just me. Nor, would I want my horse to.

It breaks my heart to hear about the loss of a horse in our sport. Some
deaths could have been prevented and some couldn't. Either way, we all learn
something. Well, most of us anyway.

Darolyn has suffered a great loss and even in her grief shared with the rest
of us this very sad story so that we might be better horsemen and women.
Thank you, Darolyn for giving the rest of us a little more insight to our
equine partners so that someone else may avoid such a scenario in the
future. Peace be with you.

I would also like to see this addressed at a convention. Like I said, I
never heard of a horse being tubed for fluid (only colics and choke) and
this whole situation was very enlightening. I would like to hear what the
ride vets know about this problem and what would be the best way to handle
it. How often does it occur and what are the triggers that set it off? Has
any research been done (on horses and endurance) and how up to date is it?
