Re: [RC] sore in horse's mouth - Dyane SmithDede, My 25 year old gelding has a sore, ulcer, in his mouth about the size of a 50 cent piece and an oral fistula. I've had him to U.C. Davis where they did x-rays and a CT scan. We also put him on antibiotics for 2 months (he couldn't eat, he hurt so much). No really good ideas. Sun also has ring bone so has been on bute ( 2 gm/day) for 7-8 yrs, so we thought maybe a version of bute toxicity although Sun does not show any signs of gastric ulcers and a course of gastogard did not change the oral ulcers. Since he's had the antibiotics and been off bute, he seems to be eating better, but we are waiting to check him out again in October (have to sedate him to see as both lesions are in the back of his mouth). Anyway, I would be very interested in anything you can find out. One of my mares has a sore in her mouth, on the inside of her lower lip. It's about the size of a nickel and I can't tell you much else because she will not let me look at it, as it's really annoying/painful. I noticed that she was drooling a little when I went out to feed, so after she ate her mush I had a look. Any ideas, maybe a sting or?? She's had allergic reactions to something a couple times in the past so I' m hoping her whole face won't swell up. Thanks for any input........
