Re: [RC] Susan - again... - Susan Garlinghouse, DVMI just got an ad online about a wormer for tapeworm. Do you know anything about this - contraindications or anythhing? San The drug agent is praziquantel, which has been around forever for treating dogs and cats and such. A fair amount of the research of tapes in horses was done here at CSU, with the conclusion that they still don't cause nearly the damage that other parasites do, but may contribute to incidence of colic when "something else" goes wrong. Sort of a straw that broke the camel's back type scenario. Praziquantel has been used for a long time in horses as well, it just wasn't very cost effective given what was thought to be very minimal risk. I'm not sure tapes are worth losing sleep over now, so not sure if it's still all that cost effective (I don't know what the new dewormer combos cost is). I do a panacur purge once or twice a year and call it good. I might do praziquantel once a year for my own guys, but don't count on it. I'd be a lot more likely to do it in young horses. JMO.
