Re: [RC] Dr. Susan G......Question - Susan Garlinghouse, DVMI haven't personally tried the Cool Calories, or known anything that has, so can't tell you much about it practically speaking. The concept is a good one, though probably most useful for horses that won't eat oil. As commented elsewhere here, I think just plain vegetable oil is pretty useful for most horses, but not during ride weekends. It does have to be kept fresh, as in away from light, heat and air as much as possible. The solid forms probably aren't as prone to rancidity, but undoubtedly it still happens at some point. Also as commented elsewhere, a Panacur purge once or twice a year is a really handy thing, as is good dental work. I also like adding a cup or two of whole flax seed a day for a little additional fat, but also for the fatty acid content. No, I don't think grinding it, boiling it, cooking it or anything else is necessary. It is 100% veg. fat and 8# of it is supposed to replace 40# of rice bran. I have a hard keeper that I have been feeding rice bran to, I also feed him LMF Development and as much beet pulp as he will eat. The dealer quit carrying rice bran and started carrying this new LMF stuff. Thanks! :) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
