Re: [RC] 2003PAC: Gate 4 (TEAMS) - rides2far3 teams are still in the hunt. Mountain is ahead by @20m, I don't get that. Karen has (leaving #4): Cia EAST (Individual) Stagg EAST (Individual) Alex Luck Mountain (Team) Becky Harris EAST (Team) Do they keep the three best times out of 4 riders? Or do they get to count all four times? If so, be interesting to see how Canada West works out. You have...I think up to 12 members on the squad, but right before the race each time zone chooses 4 riders to ride for team medals. (check yesterday's post from John for 4 man team listings from each zone) If they win a medal only those 4 get them, not the entire squad. You could actually have a rider from that zone who finished before them not get a medal, and a rider from the 4 who was pulled at the 1st check receive a medal. At least 3 out of 4 have to finish and the best 3 times count. USA-East has already lost 2 team members so is ineligible. It's up to the team vets & chef d' equip to choose the 4 riders. They may decide on which horses they feel are most sound, etc. Since the usual 100 miler has a 50% or so completion rate and for these rides it's lower it's not easy to pick 4 riders who will have a 75% completion rate while going for the front, not just to complete. There's lots of strategy and 2nd guessing. I would not want to have to make that decision! Sometimes a *really* fast rider wants to go for the individual medals and not be confined by having to be conservative for the sake of the team. If you agree to be on the 4 man team you have to agree to be willing to change your pace as the chef & vets advise you to. Oh, and my husband wants to know why Belgium and Denmark, etc are in "Pan Am"... what with them not being North, Central or South American...? I believe they can do the ride as an FEI ride, but are not eligible for the medals.
