[RC] helmet update - lisa oberteufferhi folks: thanks for all the emails, and here's my additional 2 cents worth. I got interested and surfed all over looking for data, which I won't really try to sum up here (WAY too much of it) except to say, all the people who said the sports should stick to their specific helmets appear to be right. unless maybe you go whole hog & wear a motocycle helmet for everything :) oh yes, and make sure your horse helmet has at least an ASTM F-1163 2002 rating. if you're interested (and it really is quite informative reading), there's great bike helmet info, and a nod to horse & other types as well at www.bhsi.org and the only horse helmet study I could find was done in england. info at www.mdirf.co.uk their conclusion was that a lot of horse helmets, including many of the expensive ones for jumping (the GPA among them!) do not measure up in terms of safety. nobody made a 4-star rating; among the 3-star contenders were jockey helmets (no vents, but they cover well down on your head) and almost the entire lightweight Troxel line. go figure ... lisa in santa fe (I wasn't too happy about the troxel thing because they just don't make one that fits my pin-head properly. oh well) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
