Re: [RC] Truck Ins and Over weight - Roger Rittenhouse

well I asked that - it - an LQ horse trailer is still not considered a
RV by most ins companies ...
most look at it as livestock hauler not a RV camping trailer so the ins
class is different.
Some states have different tags for real RV trailer then the horse tailer.
The trailer dealers sort of dont know or act dumb... its not their problem
if you insure it wrong and tag it wrong.. they just sell trailers.. I
called 4 trailer dealers and asked this question about ins and tags.. they
said TN you must use the 'SEMI' tag it is not considered an RV.
One dealer when asked about the over weight - told me it was not their
business what you pulled it with or what the weight limits were.

We went trailer looking to see if we should get a real legal lighter
trailer -- a trailer with all the mfgr plates RIVA and light enough to haul
2 horses with all the stuff for a weekend ride - to not over load the truck
limits.
We did not care or the options. We did however find a great BP stock for
get around trips ..

-- And my trailer while a custom install of LQ is not RIVA plated
--that also can cause problems with state DOT and some camp grounds..the
home made LQ are not legal.. best not to call it one and not make permit
gas or water connections. Everything must be removable.
Progressive Ins will not insure ANY truck over a F450 1.5 ton plus as an
RV UNLESS the state title and registration is listed as an RV or motorhome.
To get the towing truck registered and insured and an RV you must have a
RV conversion done.
Problem is if the conversion to the truck to make it an RV is after market
the VIN number is still listed as commercial unless you get the title
classification changed. To get that done here in TN you MUST have the
conversion done by a commercial conversion shop that will get it inspected
and put on the proper RIVA plates etc and then get the title changed..
Example is the big truck rigs that pull race cars.. they are legal RVs.

My big truck is a conversion based on an INT s1900 med duty truck chassis -
it is a legal MH but not plated RIVA.. so I could still get a ticket for
that. But the INS is RV and the TAG is 'joint' TN does not have a separate
RV tag ..

I asked the INS agent - independent agent - if they had any company that
would look at the pickup truck F350 as a RV - NO.. same goes for the F450 -
What was done just a few years ago is not legal today. They have changed
the rules and insurance under writers are calling things what they are...
how the state sees it in the registration and title.
I have been beating this drum for the last year. It is a bit more complex
then many think and the worst part is many do not have the correct
insurance and can be dropped .

I may just go back to a motorhome and BP trailer. They make some real nice
class C rigs based on the F450 PSD - just keep the BP trailer to the
correct weight and that thing will pull any where.. not sure IF you can get
a 4x4 in that set up - dont see why not but I have not seen it
advertised.

Roger, check in to RV insurance through an RV dealer. I read recently
that
the F650 was a medium Duty truck and was still classified as just that
when
used for RV pulling. Why would an LQ trailer with RIVA plate be any
different!?
