[RC] just my two cents -My 25 yr old Anglo (retired; sits in the pasture now) was still a controlled run-way for the 1st 15 miles even at 17 yrs. I always started after everyone had left camp, sometimes 30 min. behind. He had over 1200 competition miles and still was crazy at the beginning of a ride. I did drill team on him for 6-7 years. It wasn't so much the crowd that bothered him as the people that turned their horses literally under his neck in the grand entry. Can't count how many hours and miles of training he had on him. We even had to resort to putting a jacket over his eyes at vet checks sometimes because he got to excited with all the horses milling around. Some horses never get "used" to it and calm down. You just have to work with what you got. I personally think he was an adrenaline junkie like me. On the bright side I could ride him the last 50 miles of a 100 in a halter. He also liked to play games. There wasn't a knot you could tie that he couldn't undo if he wanted to. At one ride I had to go through a wire gate and had to close it back. He decide to "go ahead" down the trail and let me catch up later. He never ran away just walked unless I tried to jog up behind him then he'd trot just far enough to be out of reach. After about a mile he just stopped and said you ready to get back on? He has was always a pain in the a**, but I would not trade him for anything in the world. I haven't found another like him yet. All you can do is try.
