Natural herbal remedies are not

The answer is ... It is not simple. The act of getting
that fact across to people is a major effort. People do not want to believe that
their favorite nostrum is a drug, after all it only contains "natural herbs".
Every one wants that "edge" over the competition. Proper conditioning and proper
nutrition are not the "designer way" of doing the best for your horse. Just look
at the preponderance of postings on this forum lately. They are about additives,
designer foods, performance enhancements and so on. Very little about simple
basic equine diets and good conditioning regimens. Every one is looking for that
"fast juice to give to their horses.

Herbal remidies are not tested and developed by
the scientific method. The active ingreedients are often unknown.
The potency varies from plant to plant. Many of them are a waste of
money because they don't do what they are supposed to. If you beleive
that some chemical in them is affecting your horse's performance, you are
kidding yourself if you think that the herb is not a "drug" or a "performance
enhancer". Even if neither you or anyone else knows what is in the herb,
if it is a "performance enhancer" it is banned.
Natural herbal remidies are not innocous.
