I fed Texas Red Oat hay all last year. It has
enough nutrition, but I still found that the horses left way too much stem on
the ground.
My suggestion is to feed the Oat hay at night,
give them plenty and let it be more of a munching thru the night sort of thing,
they won't gobble it up like good grass or grass/alfalfa, but Oat hay is good
and it will keep them grazing during the night.
I've found that my boy loves oat hay,
particularly at rides. He currently gets a very good quality grass hay,
free choice all day as well as feeding 3 times per day (some people might say
he's spoiled but definitely worth it) of beet pulp slurry (other stuff in it).
Any thoughts how much oat hay (as a supplement to grass or instead), how
often and/or free choice. I haven't looked at the archives (going to in
a moment) but thought I'd ask. . . hope you don't mind.
Sandy and Tally (not an easy keeper of weight but
definitely better than he used to be)
