[RC] Question for ALL riders & vets! - Karen J ZelinskyHi ya'll! Okay, down and dirty question ... (as if we need more, right? ::)) . . . I have been chosen by a racetrack client to do a large poster-size schematic diagram of WHERE to apply water to a thoroughbred after a race - in the paddock. This person has informed me that even the track vet has been commenting on how heat exhaustion, etc. has really affected many horses lately - ye olde heat and humidity picture. I told her that you endurance folks are light-years ahead of everyone in the cooling-down and recovery department - you have to be! And we both commiserated about how little is known and/or practiced to cool down the racehorses at the tracks. She is currently involved with a groom "education" program which has been available nationally for the last 3 years -- it involves 8 weeks of two 3-hour classes/week for grooms to learn basic stuff. She was appalled at how little seems to be known/practiced in the cooling down category. So ... enuf said - you get my drift! Remember, these horses are doing cold-starts, full speed for a mile or so, and then done. I know there are tons of you with your thousands of miles of knowledge who can point to the obvious (to you) spots to cool down on the horse at vet checks.... I thought I could do it without asking, but want your thousands of miles of knowledge - from vets and others. Thank you very much, in advance! Help me help this track, and maybe others, save some race horses from heat-stress!
